20 years ago, phoning a friend meant being tethered to the wall by a squiggly, off-white cord. It also meant regionally-specific, expert garden advice arrived weekly in the local newspaper.
Westwind Flyer addresses the contraction of expert-written garden content in the Interior West by offering in-depth, regionally-focused garden content and a conversational delivery.
Today, folks interested in learning about regional gardening need much of the same information the did 20 years ago, and face many of the same challenges - heat, drought, extreme wind and cold, and pests. Yet, gardeners today are forced to sift through posts on social media, clickbait articles, available books and what few regional columns remain. All while facing an increasingly uncertain climate future.
To address this missing link, and to provide an outlet for my own writing that doesn’t have to conform to a set tone, length or content, I created a Substack page, Westwind Flyer. Like Zephyr Gardens, The Flyer is a mission-driven project created to make positive difference in this world where change increasingly seems to have a cancerous rather than a constructive flair.
Westwind Flyer features content covering a variety of garden topics, from food crops to native plants. It uses a conversational delivery and practical edge that makes it appropriate for gardeners of most levels - beginner to professional - and helps readers understand and apply bigger concepts in their own homes and endeavors without watering the art and science down.
