The Roots of Zephyr Gardens
Zephyr Gardens is a nexus that leverages teaching, talks, writing, photography, and plant introductions to create and grow gardeners in touch with the landscapes and spirit of the American West.
Great plants grow all across the West, yet only a fraction of these are currently offered in nurseries.
Zephyr Gardens, like the West Wind carrying seeds, helps to lift overlooked plants into regional gardens.
These plants can be overlooked due to lack of awareness, but more frequently have been passed over due to some issue with their cultivation. Often, this is intolerance for production in a nursery, lack of cold-hardiness, excessive size or vigor, or a brief period of bloom.
Zephyr Gardens seeks out these hidden gems and gives them a polishing, breeding to overcome the cultural or aesthetic challenges that had kept these otherwise superb native plants in the wild and out of our gardens. While doing so, Zephyr prioritizes keeping the essence of the plant intact, retaining its appeal to birds and insects, durability, beauty and value to cultivated plant communities, like gardens.
Celebrating and respecting the natural beauty of the Interior West – its land, its resources and its inhabitants – is foundational to the concept that created Zephyr Gardens.
That concept created a dual mission: Zephyr Gardens should
also act as a “voice on the wind”.
Created by Bryan Fischer in 2025, Zephyr is designed to serve as a hub for teaching, learning and inspiration for the garden-curious, hobby gardeners and landscape professionals alike. Zephyr overlays Bryan’s horticulture writing and changemaking, photography, speaking and teaching, and blends that with added content, all designed to foster and forward sustainable, beautiful, and durable landscapes for the 21st century.
